This was created on 06/09/2008 at 8:23 am The b&w filming took about 20 minutes, then post-editing was 60 mins. This was a spontaneous idea to create a short clip of a NIN composition. I'm still surprised it worked out well for something so on-the-spot (thought of the idea a night ago, wasn't sure HOW until morning). Corona Radiata (Crown Radiant) seems to confuse many fans into it's meaning. Some say it relates to a 'halo slipping'; others think it's something building up deep inside. Personally, I relate it to the latter only with overt references to pregnancy (in the song itself, there's screaming of babies towards the climax). I decided to make a film about it... about the aspect of HOW a pregnancy came to be, it's eerie insides and much more almost... macabre details without the slightest hint of gore. I also love the song for how entirely... evil it sounds. For some strange reason, it is reminscent of MM - TGAoG front cover artwork, well to me anyway... :) It was filmed on a Samsung L100 Digital Camera with video recording function. I put the b&w effect on for noir aesthetics (I REALLY couldn't see this working in colour...). Much of the video's beauty is in anticipation. For the entire first 3 minutes, the lens is pointed at a kitchen oven (almost static but still handheld). I wanted to convey the tranquility of the introduction. The first thing that came to mind was this. Something's started to heat up inside... what could it be? A physical object inside a woman (child) or feeling inside a man (lust)? Soon afterwards, a seamless transistion into analysing some sort of fabric object. What is it? Is it a dress? Is is a bedsheet? I decided to film it like a landscape (canyon) to add to the ominousity. Both conceptions of dresses and bedsheets fit into the reproduction theme (how it - excuse the pun - came about) of the vid/song. Midway through (if you have good speakers), you can hear a sine wave in the background. The song is finally picking up... Then suddenly the background synth cuts off... By now, the camera is on a grill of some kind. What is it? As the music intensifies it is revealed that the object behind the grill represents a embryo/womb shape. In reality it is my bass amplifier speaker (I chose it because the bass of the actual song is starting to take over and because looks vague). This close-up goes all 'Irreversible' (another influence) as the camera starts spinning at a dizzying velocity (with babies screaming in audio background). This is the climax of the clip. After a while the camera goes to the side of the speaker in which it segues into... The oven again. This time, a pixelating effect has been overdubbed on the visuals. The music is calming down as too does the oven. It's fading out of sight, until the Corona Radiata artwork logo appears on screen. This sums is all up. A womb protected by a circle has been punctured and thus the fetus is now dying (blood traces spilling out the bottom). It seems like an abortion or irrepairable damage. As this fades away, the music again crescendoes and a final brief (subliminal reasons) image of the Head Down artwork logo appears spontaneously (be quick to catch it). The logo depicts two shapes. This could be translated as a (left figure) person with a (right figure) gun to their mouth and thus pulling the trigger to commit suicide, evident by the blood marks (same as Corona Radiata's. Could it be the baby's?) on the back of their head. Post-natal depression, maybe? It's a vague, yet thoughtful conclusion. Personally I find it MUCH more interesting to make videos to instrumentals as the canvas is blank for myself to work on. I just put my own interpretations of it on film; you can make your own when watching my videos.
