Cecil Leeson American Saxophone Pioneer

Back

Cecil Leeson was one of the great American Saxophone pioneers of the mid-20th century. He and Larry Teal were the two great American saxophone artists who brought the alto saxophone into the realm of classial music in America. An example of Leeson's importance is that Paul Creston wrote his saxophone Sonata Op.19 for Cecil Leeson. This recording is from an late- 1950s (1957 or 58?) LP of Cecil Leeson and String Quintet and is the only recording of Leeson I've found. This piece, written by Leon Stein, is a portion of the 3rd movement of his Quintet for Sax and Strings. I was forced to shorten it up and edit out purely string sections to give deference to Leeson's playing which includes a cadenza. I think it at least gives light to this seminal figure whose music otherwise seems lost.
