Man offers his home rent-free, but there's a catch

PHOENIX, AZ -- An Arcadia homeowner who can't rent his house plans to offer up his home rent-free to anyone who wants to take care of it. A weakening economy has left abandoned homes all over the Phoenix-metro area. "Danny" has one of those abandoned homes in Arcadia. He sold it more than a year ago, but the deal fell through. Since that time, "Danny" said the home's condition has weakened. As a result, the lawn needs to be mowed, the house needs to be cleaned, and its outward appearance could be bringing down the neighborhood. "I know my neighbors and I like them and I don't want to put them in a situation where their property values are going down," Danny said. Because of that, Danny is trying to find someone to live in the home-rent free, as long as they get it back to the way it used to look. "A vacant house, you have the possibility of, you know, undesirables coming in trashing the place," Danny said. The big problem is that the home could be foreclosed on at any moment, so if someone did move in they could be evicted without any legal rights to stay in the home. "Danny" admits his plan needs work, but he hopes others learn from his situation. "I would have to trust the person and I'm not even sure that's an option right now, it would have to be the exact right situation," Danny said. Neighbor Ted Wilson has lived on the same street as Danny for more than 50 years and says a lot of these abandoned homes are popping up around him. "It's sad that people let it go," said Wilson. "It's still a good neighborhood and those few houses are exceptions. I think in the neighborhood, it [would] be better if they get somebody in and take care of them."
